Surgery
Minimally invasive and Da Vinci robotic surgeries — less pain, faster recovery, better outcomes.
Gynecologist Lauren Spoo, of Lauren Spoo & Associates in Houston, Texas, provides a compassionate bedside manner while applying advanced techniques and technologies in the operating room.
What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery uses a tool called a laparoscope to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures. The laparoscope — a small device equipped with a camera — is inserted through tiny incisions, displaying an enlarged image on an operating room monitor so the surgeon can visualize and treat damaged tissue with precision.
Laparoscopic surgery causes little postoperative discomfort and minimal recovery time as compared to conventional open surgery.
- Endometriosis treatment
- Ovarian cyst removal
- Fibroid removal (myomectomy)
- Tubal ligation
- Pelvic adhesion removal
- Diagnostic evaluation of pelvic pain
What is Hysterectomy Surgery?
Hysterectomy is a way of treating problems that affect the uterus. A hysterectomy is major surgery, that happens only after other treatment options have not improved the patient's problems.
Three types of hysterectomy are available:
- Total Hysterectomy — removes the uterus and cervix
- Supracervical Hysterectomy — removes the uterus while preserving the cervix
- Radical Hysterectomy — removes the uterus, cervix, and surrounding tissue
What is Hysteroscopy Surgery?
Hysteroscopy is a technique used to look inside the uterus. A hysteroscope is a thin, lighted, telescope-like device that is placed into the uterus through the vagina and cervix, enabling direct visualization and treatment of uterine abnormalities.
Both diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy are offered:
- Diagnosing abnormal uterine bleeding
- Removing uterine polyps or fibroids
- Treating intrauterine adhesions
- Evaluating recurrent miscarriage
- Endometrial biopsy
What is Dilation and Curettage (D&C)?
Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure that is used to diagnose and treat many conditions that affect the uterus. Dilation involves opening the cervix to allow instrument insertion, while curettage involves removing tissue from the uterine interior.
D&C is performed for several reasons:
- Diagnosing uterine cancer or abnormal cells
- Treating heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Removing tissue after a miscarriage
- Removing uterine polyps
- Treating an incomplete miscarriage
Da Vinci Robotic Surgery
Dr. Spoo is trained in Da Vinci robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery — offering unparalleled precision and visualization for complex procedures. Robotic surgery means smaller incisions, less blood loss, reduced pain, and faster recovery times.
